Calling all LGBT Former and current Jehovah's Witnesses. (especially Bethelites, Gilead Graduates, etc)
by Joliette injust starting this thread because i really want to reach out and hear stories from lgbt witnesses both former and current.
i myself am a african american lesbian and i was raised indirectly as a 3rd generation jehovah's witness, and my parents know about my sexuality.
i dont know if i'd get a good response here, (i thought about going to a more private forum on this website) but i'd think i'd get the better response here.

Okay...gotta branch off into this discussion. I write a blog for Freeminds.org about my experience as a gay man in the Kingdom Hall, and just because I happen to be a gay dude who lives in California, I created an art piece on Prop8. I'm fed up to the top of my bald head with religion being allowed to dictate how everyone else should live. I had enough of that with the Witnesses......So, as long as someone has started this topic, I thought I'd post a link to my art piece. It's been suggested that I will be going to hell for doing this, but thanks to my years in the Kingdom Hall, I know that there ain't no such thing as hell. Anyway, I used pages torn from the Bible and the Book of Mormon to create this, along with a whole bunch of YesOn8 yard signs.....hope you all enjoy it. Well, not everyone will enjoy it, the dude who referred to me as a fag, for example. But the rest of you might see some humor in this. Just click on the Prop8 Art tab, or on the Freeminds Blog tab for a link to my blog on Freeminds.org. Hope you all stop by and read it, and thanks for letting me share.

Hi Joliette....The Freeminds.org site does have to pages devoted to gay and lesbian Witnesses. The first is a blog that I write, titled "A Gay Exit from The Truth." That blog is more geared towards my own experiences with the Witnesses, and my being gay. The link to that page is
http://www.freeminds.org/blogs/a-gay-exit-from-the-truth/
The second page is a forum devoted to LGBT Witnesses and ex-Witnesses, and is a place for them to share stories and support. We just launched it a couple of months ago, and I think you will find the stories to be interesting. The link to it is

Hope that helps!

Hey Serenity...I think it's wonderful what you're attempting to do...if only it could be that easy. I am a gay man who left the JWs, and I write a blog for Freeminds.org on my experience. I think that the conclusion you could draw from all of the comments to your question is that all of the people who wrote in are correct. It usually takes a combination of things to allow a gay person to find their way out of the Kingdom Hall, and as you know, there really is no room in the Kingdom Hall for gay or lesbian people. Being condemned for something you have no control over is an impossible battle, and I hope your friend finds his way out (although of course, it is possible that he is not gay, but it's nice of you to be supportive.)
In my case, I made it out of the Kingdom Hall by accident. It had nothing to do with being gay, and it was only through time, and supportive non-Witnesses, and even things like TV (per one of the comments to your post), that I was able to see clearly. I think that accepting the fact that I am gay is what allowed me to abandoned The Truth once and for all, but your friend is going to have to find his own path out.
You might suggest that he visit a few choice websites for additional information. I don't know how on earth you would do that...perhaps, "Hi Friend. I think you might be gay. Have you ever visited XYZ.com?".....okay, that won't really work. I don't know how you will get him to view information that refutes what he has been told by the Witnesses, but information is key.
And there is a group devoted to LGBTexWitnesses called A Common Bond.
You could also refer him to my blog on Freeminds.org titled A Gay Exit From The Truth which is http://www.freeminds.org/blogs/a-gay-exit-from-the-truth/
Additionally, Freeminds now hosts a forum for gay and lesbian Witnesses to share their stories (and hopefully offer support). That forum is titled In And Out of The Kingdom Hall Closet at http://www.freeminds.org/lgbt-forum/
Thanks so much, Scott Terry

Hi Lee....great to see and read your column. I will mention it on the new forum for gay and lesbian exJWs that is hosted by Freeminds. I get so many emails for people who haven't yet made it out of the Kingdom Hall, and are really struggling with issues of sexuality, so your theme of recovery will be really helpful. Thanks so much.
